Abstract:This talk explores cutting-edge research and projects that are revolutionizing our perception of gender in the construction industry and built environment. It addresses the systemic obstacles that women encounter in these fields, while also highlighting proven strategies to promote gender equality. Attendees will gain valuable insights into how gender-transformative approaches can lead to more inclusive spaces, better working conditions, and increased sustainability in the built environment. Through innovative design solutions, policy interventions, and community engagement strategies, we will chart a path towards a more inclusive future where everyone feels safe, empowered, and valued. This talk aims to inspire both academics and practitioners to challenge conventional norms and strive for a built environment that authentically represents the diversity of our society. Speaker:<a href="https://www.londonmet.ac.uk/profiles/our-staff/staff-profiles-content-store-hidden/school-of-the-built-environment/dr-mariam-akinlolu/" title="https://www.londonmet.ac.uk/profiles/our-staff/staff-profiles-content-store-hidden/school-of-the-built-environment/dr-mariam-akinlolu/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Mariam Akinlolu</a> holds a Bachelor of Technology degree in Project Management from Bells University of Technology, Nigeria and a Master of Construction degree from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, South Africa. She also earned a PhD in Construction Management from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Currently, Mariam serves as a Lecturer in Construction and the Head of Research and Knowledge Exchange at London Met's <a href="https://www.londonmet.ac.uk/schools/built-environment/" title="https://www.londonmet.ac.uk/schools/built-environment/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">School of the Built Environment</a>. Additionally, she is a Research Fellow in the School of the Built Environment, Engineering and Technology, at Nelson Mandela University, South Africa. Mariam has presented numerous papers at both local and international conferences, published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, written chapters in books, and edited several book collections. She has led and participated in several international funded projects and possesses a combination of teaching, research, and practical experience in the Built Environment, with a particular focus on promoting social inclusion and gender-lens infrastructure development. Mariam's academic pursuits have been shaped by her passion for interdisciplinary research that explores the intersections of social, political, and economic factors in Africa and Europe. Specifically, her research centers around sustainable work, education, environment, and transformation, all of which are crucial in addressing the societal and economic challenges facing the continents. Mariam is deeply committed to transformative solutions that promote socio-economic progress, including the creation of decent work and sustainable livelihoods, robust and responsive economic infrastructure, quality education, and the protection and enhancement of environmental assets and natural resources, as well as occupational health and safety.
