This Masterclass will discuss digital waste and the idea of "toxic data"

This Masterclass will focus on the idea of digital waste and "toxic data". Participants will be required to read the article "<a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0306312718783087" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Toxic politics: Acting in a permanently polluted world</a>" and are also encouraged to read "<a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/2053951719875479" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Data out of place: Toxic traces and the politics of recycling</a>" in preparation for this Masterclass. A short task will be set up for the attendees and circulated ahead of the eventNanna Bonde Thylstrup is Associate Professor of Communication and Digital Media at Copenhagen Business School (CBS). Her writing and teaching focus on the digital media and digital epistemologies. More specifically, she is interested in the politics of data, algorithms and machine learning systems. Her most recent book Uncertain Archives: Critical Keywords for the Age of Big Data (co-edited with Daniela Agostinho, Annie Ring, Catherine D’Ignazio and Kristin Veel, MIT Press, 2021) explores the uncertainties of big data environments. Among her other published works on the politics of digital media, The Politics of Mass Digitization (MIT Press, 2019), examines the ongoing datafication and privatization of digital cultural memory infrastructures. Currently, Nanna Bonde Thylstrup is the PI of the DFF-funded collective research project titled, AI Reuse, which looks at the politics of data and model reuse in machine learning systems within the Danish public sector (with Mikkel Flyverbom, Louise Amoore, and Kristian Bondo Hansen) and the international research network Content Moderation Assemblages: Filtering Glocal Communities (FILTER).
