Tracing the Tow Path

MA Situated Practice is a platform for developing creative projects that are situated physically and engage with contemporary social, cultural, economic, environmental and political conditions. This practice-led transdisciplinary course questions the role of the public practitioner and explores a critical spatial practice across art, architecture, performance, writing and urbanism.Situated Practice: Live presents a sequence of moments through which practitioners share their work with the public. Visitors are invited to participate in immersive performances, attend screenings, hear readings, share stories and contribute to workshops and discussions. The series of events are free to attend and open to all.

Through a collective act of walking and listening we will explore concepts of specificity, sensitivity and subjectivity within the city.

Hackney Wick Station

Take part in a collective act of walking to explore the importance of specificity, sensitivity and subjectivity within the built environment and challenge the detached, dis-embodied and distanced practices that surround urban transformation.Through her concept of ‘situated knowledges’ Donna Harraway argues that knowledge is always derived from a position or point of view. Haraway argues for situated and embodied knowledges and against various forms of unlocatable, and so irresponsible, knowledge claims. During this intervention we come to ask: How can the concept of ‘situated knowledges’ be harnessed within discourses of urban planning? How can contemporary urban practices become located within a site and grounded within the surrounding context? How can we celebrate embodied knowledges and come to value voices that are locatable, accountable and responsible?Through a collective act of walking and listening you are invited to hear the voices of the local community and welcomed to challenge your own position, perspective and interpretation of the landscape.To attend this event an eventbrite ticket is essential. A short audio piece will be emailed to attendees prior to the event which each participant is asked to download to their device and listen to using their own headphones throughout the event.Sophie Hardcastle is a Situated Practice student at the Bartlett.
