Training, Citizenship and Performance

Sarah Weston is a Lecturer in the School of Media and Communication at the University of Leeds. Her research focuses on the application of performance training as a political tool, particularly exploring the voice. She is Co-Editor of the Theatre Dance and Performance Training Blog through which she is examining the use of performance training in community settings. She is also a theatre practitioner, specifically in applied and community contexts and she is currently working with Salford Community Theatre on their 2019 production, The Salford Docker.

Hosted by Political Communications Research Group (School of Media and Communication) and Performance Training, Preparation and Pedagogy Research Group (School of Performance and Cultural Industries). Supported by Centre for Practice-Led Research in the Arts, University of Leeds.
Can performer training be used to promote, support or enhance citizenship? This one-day symposium draws together research and practice in political communication, theatre and performance to explore the extent to which training methods can be tools of democracy, political participation and citizen activity. Join us for an afternoon of conversation, practical workshops and panel presentations tackling these key questions. 
Citizenship refers to the ways in which people relate to democracy, community and the social good. Training in relation to citizenship could involve pedagogic practices which ‘impart knowledge and skills that will enable future citizens to act within and upon the public domain’ (Coleman 2014: 409). In this symposium we will explore practices of performance training that have consciously intervened in the social and the political, as well as the extent to which trainers consider their students as citizens and how that impacts on their practice and pedagogy. Finally, we will discuss the ways in which training creeps into our everyday and regular practices of citizenship, thinking about how training can make us notice everyday civic practices in a different way. In a time of political uncertainty, where national and international events are calling into question normative values of democracy, this event will examine how our research and practice of training might fit into this conversation.
For academics, practitioners, students and anyone interested in these issues. Participation in practical workshops encouraged, but observation also welcome.

Contributors Biographies: 
Proper Job Theatre
Based in the North of England, Proper Job create and tour new work, producing large-scale theatre events, whilst engaging in the local community across Yorkshire and the North West. Through the LAB Project, the company draws on drama practices to support unemployed adults back into employment, training, volunteering or education. Max Hafler
Max Hafler is an actor, director and voice coach based in Galway, Ireland. His approach draws together voice training with Michael Chekhov and he runs Chekhov Training and Performance Ireland. He has also specialised in youth theatre and applied theatre practices, specifically working with Blue Teapots Theatre Company. His book Teaching Voice is a practical guide to working on the voice with young people. Professor Stephen Coleman
Stephen Coleman is a Professor in Political Communication in the School of Media and Communication, University of Leeds. His research interests include methods of political engagement, digital citizenship and citizenship education, and dramatisation of political events.
