About this event
Training: Supporting survivors of gender-based violence access compensation
The training is aimed at those supporting victims/survivors.
This training will introduce participants to compensation and damages available to women who have experienced gender-based violence in the UK, including relevant rules and evidence required.
Who can attend?
This training is designed for organisations and agencies who would like to learn more about different types of compensation available to survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). An understanding of GBV is helpful but not necessary, and you do not need to be working directly with survivors to attend.
This training is open to all but has been designed with the following in mind:
• Advocacy Workers
• Support Workers
• Law Students
• Trainee Solicitors
• Social Workers
• Council Workers
• Housing Officers
• Mental Health Charities
• Workers Supporting Women
• Nurses
• Health Sector Workers
Free spaces are available for Advocacy workers of the Rape Crisis Network. Please email the SWRC team at eventbrite@scottishwomensrightscentre.org.uk to register.
Learning objectives
This session will equip attendees with a basic understanding of the types of compensation available to survivors of gender-based violence and the processes for accessing these. Participants should gain the ability to confidently support and provide information to survivors so they can make informed choices when obtaining their own legal representation. Please note that it is not intended to provide information on conducting legal cases.
In this session, participants will:
- Learn about the Scottish Women’s Rights Centre and Just Right Scotland and what we offer to survivors of gender-based violence
- Gain an understanding of the basic civil justice processes available to survivors seeking compensation and damages both through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) and personal injury claims in relation to GBV, including and what evidence is required to make a claim
- Explore how these issues arise in practice
We know that third sector organisations may not support CICA applications. This session is designed to increase workers’ confidence around the topic, ensuring they can give clients basic information about damages and compensation and better support survivors to manage their expectations of both process.
The session will be facilitated by Reegan Bonar, Justice Training Worker for Scottish Women’s Rights Centre & Rape Crisis Scotland & a member of the legal team at Just Right Scotland.
