Coming to hospital in any capacity can cause anyone to feel anxious and vulnerable. This is a fact that hospital staff are aware of, and because of this they do what they can to put patients at ease by talking, listening and showing kindness.
For a person whose gender identity has changed, or is changing, anxiety and a sense of vulnerability are often intensified, due to having to expose this sensitive aspect of self with strangers.
There may be other feelings such as a fear of being judged, or apprehension at the prospect of having to repeatedly disclose gender identity to different staff.
Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are holding a ‘patient and public involvement’ workshop to discuss ideas and listen to the views of people with lived experience, to understand what improvements can be made to how care and treatment are given to Trans* people.
If you are a Trans* person, a friend, healthcare professional or volunteer who wants to be involved in improving patient experience, this event could be for you.
