TRANSCEND Seminar: City/science intersections

The  TRANSCEND project, funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) in the UK, aims to investigate socio-technical systems required for enabling a transition towards a more risk-sensitive and transformative urban development approach in Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Malaysia. It aims to promote a participatory approach that supports the transparent and democratic involvement of all the relevant stakeholders (including experts from local authorities, disaster management authorities, developers, poor and vulnerable communities, and humanitarian organisations) to analyse, forecast, visualize and debate disaster-risk trade-offs and to choose development plans that ensure sustainability and equitable resilience, giving considerations to climate change adaptation.

City/science intersections: a scoping review of science for policy in urban contexts with Prof. Marie-Christine Therrien

OVERVIEWProf. Marie-Christine Therrien presents a scoping review using approaches promoted by Peters et al. (2018). The goal of the research examines what is known about science for urban policy according to scientific literature. Science for urban policy is the use of scientific evidence and approaches by city/municipal administrations to guide policy-making and decision-making. Large and medium-sized cities and cities with populations larger than 30,000 people were included. The objectives of conducting a scoping review were to identify the existing research on urban science for policy, specifically the context for its emergence, the actors involved, the structures and mechanisms used to strengthen links between researchers and decision-makers, its challenges, and results. The seminar will present the results of this scoping review.SPEAKERMarie-Chris­tine Ther­rien is a Man­age­ment Pro­fes­sor at the École nationale d’administration publique, and Direc­tor of Cité-ID Liv­ingLab Urban Resilience Gov­er­nance. Her research explores issues of net­work coor­di­na­tion, organ­i­sa­tion­al fail­ure, knowl­edge trans­fer, resilience in organ­i­sa­tions, and cri­sis man­age­ment. Over the years, she has men­tored and super­vised over 20 grad­u­ate stu­dents. Out­side of her aca­d­e­m­ic research, Prof. Ther­rien has worked in part­ner­ship with sev­er­al pub­lic and pri­vate organ­i­sa­tions, such as the Mon­tréal Cen­ter of Resilience, Sci­ence Appli­ca­tion Inter­na­tion­al Cor­po­ra­tion, the Que­bec gov­ern­ment, and the Cana­di­an Red Cross. With­in these expe­ri­ences, she suc­cess­ful­ly assist­ed the City of Mon­tréal in join­ing the Rock­e­feller Foundation’s 100 resilient cities pro­gramme. She has pub­lished arti­cles in numer­ous jour­nals, such as the Jour­nal of Con­tin­gen­cies and Cri­sis Man­age­ment, Resilience: Inter­na­tion­al Poli­cies, Prac­tices and Dis­cours­es, Inter­na­tion­al Jour­nal of Risk Assess­ment and Man­age­ment, etc. She is the pri­ma­ry author of more than 20 papers and book chap­ters, as well as the edi­tor-in-chief for Inter­na­tion­al Jour­nal of Emer­gency Management.Photo: Ryoji Iwata on Unsplash.com
