About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

Arrival from 7.30pm onwards. Lisa's talk will start promptly at 8pm.

Join Lisa Astbury BSc (Hons) RVN Multidisciplinary Nurse at Blaise Veterinary Referral Hospital for an hour-long in-person CPD opportunity discussing blood transfusions. This will include the uses of different blood products, collecting blood, cross-matching and typing, admin and monitoring guidelines and transfusion reactions.

After qualifying from Harper Adams University with a first-class BSc (Hons) in Veterinary Nursing, Lisa worked in a general practice hospital for five years gaining a high level of ability and skills across all areas of primary practice hospital nursing. In 2023, Lisa made the decision to transition into referral nursing to pursue the opportunity to work with patients with complex conditions undergoing advanced levels of diagnostics and treatment. The opportunity to join Blaise from the very start also presented a unique opportunity to be involved with the growth of a referral centre from the beginning.

Lisa has developed capabilities across all areas of the hospital including surgery, anaesthesia, neurology, imaging, internal medicine and in our ICU. However, her primary interest is in medicine and emergency and critical care. She particularly enjoys endocrine, renal, respiratory and transfusion medicine and during her time in ICU, the opportunity to nurse patients who present very poorly and see them go home has been very fulfilling.

Lisa started her Post Graduate Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Nursing with the Royal Veterinary College in 2024 to increase her knowledge even further. Since starting at Blaise, she has also authored some of the content for IVC Evidensia’s in-house course on medical nursing.

Lisa is very passionate about advocating for the RVN’s capabilities. As the patients advocate, she is keen to utilise fear free values for patients to feel as safe as possible during those times they are not very well. Furthermore, throughout her nursing career she has always promoted the best care through evidence-based medicine. Lisa sits on Blaises’ Clinical Governance Committee to assist in maintaining high standards of care.

As a Clinical Supervisor, Lisa has supported student nurses in their training and finds mentoring extremely satisfying. She is looking forward to promoting civility and supportive team values within Blaise and guiding students and new graduate nurses in the future and is currently a VCA mentor.
