Equipping primary school governors in the safeguarding and legal issues relating to the presence of gender dysphoric children in schools.

This training session will equip primary school governors in the health, safeguarding and legal issues pertaining to the presence of children with gender dysphoria in schools. We will be joined by legal experts as well as those with experience in education and research. An outline for the session is below:1. Update on DfE Guidance and Topical Issues - Steve Beegoo (Head of Education at Christian Concern)S﻿teve will introduce the session, summarise the position of current guidance and discuss what what happens in practice nationally. 2﻿. Children’s Health Issues - Dr Julie Maxwell (Community Paediatrician)Dr Julie Maxwell will help define the key terms and will examine the different potential causes of gender dysphoria. She will discuss the implications of the social transitioning of children as well as the medical/chemical interventions and pathways.3.	Question and answer session with Julie - Chaired by Steve Beegoo4.	The Legal Position for Governance - Roger Kiska (Christian Legal Centre)Roger will discuss the Protected Characteristic of ‘gender reassignment’ and the latest legal guidance on this issue. He will share from his experiences of supporting parents as they challenge schools on these issue and explain how governors can implement best practice when creating and monitoring the implementation of policies. 5. Questions and answers with all panel including Dr Carys Mosely (Sexuality and Gender Expert)6.	Closing remarks T﻿he Zoom link will be sent upon registration. Steve has worked in the educational and ecclesiastical arenas for over 27 years. He has been a teacher in state, special and independent schools, has led in Church of England and Independent Christian schools, and was principal at The King’s School Witney over a period of 8 years. Steve pastored Bicester Community Church for 9 years, where he pioneered a Christian pre-school as a part of a community outreach project. He has supported schools and educational organisations nationally, and internationally including in Asia, Africa, South America, Australia, and Europe. Steve is passionate in helping the church recognise the central role children’s discipleship has in fulfilling ‘The Great Commission’. He regularly speaks at events, in the media, and writes articles on many issues associated with Christian freedoms and education. Steve is also the CEO of The Christian Schools’ Trust, the vice chairman of the Christian Coalition for Education and a member of the Standing Advisory Council for RE in Oxfordshire which brings him into contact with leaders of many organisations and political influencers. Steve holds a degree in Biology from Southampton University, a PGCE from Oxford Brookes University and holds the NPQH (National Professional Qualification for Headteachers). He is married with three children.

Roger Kiska is legal counsel at the Christian Legal Centre and a solicitor for England and Wales. He has extensive experience before the European Court of Human Rights and has litigated at the Court of Justice of the European Union. In 2010, he received the Scandinavian Human Dignity Award. In 2020 he was recognised by the Slovakian Association of Family Judges and the Ministry of Justice for his work on behalf of the family. He has also served as an elected member of the European Union's Fundamental Rights Agency Advisory Panel. He has also published numerous scholarly articles and chapters in academic books.

Dr Carys Moseley is a public policy researcher and analyst with Christian Concern. Whilst covering general government policy from a Christian perspective, she specialises in covering policy debates on sexual ethics and gender. Her academic background is in Classics and in Christian Theology and Ethics.

Dr Julie Maxwell has worked as a Community Paediatrician in Hampshire for over 20 years. She is married to Alistair and they have 3 young adult/teenage children. She also served as a Primary School Governor for 15 years. Recently Julie has given up her role in the NHS and has taken on the role of Deputy Director of Lovewise a charity which seeks to help parents, youth groups and schools by providing presentations on the subjects of marriage, sex and relationships from a Christian perspective. Over the past 5 years she has become increasingly interested in and concerned about the area of gender dysphoria in children. She has become particularly involved in the debate around the best management of children and young people questioning their gender and the role of schools in supporting these vulnerable children and families.
