Translate MedTech - Developing medical devices

Are you looking to develop a medical device but want to avoid the pitfalls associated with developing a product? Do you want to test if your product is commercially viable?

This training course will explore all aspects of the medical device development process, from concept to pitching, as well as looking at trigger points in the medical device development process, and how to keep the project moving along the innovation journey.

This training course will cover:

  • Why good ideas fail
  • Trigger points when developing medical devices
  • Failing fast; failing cheap
  • Documentation
  • Commercial viability and risk management
  • Moving the project forward

By the end of the day you will:

  • Understand why good ideas fail due to issues such as budgeting, IP, a lack of commercial viability, as well as others
  • Understand competing products; identifying the unique selling point; assessing whether it is one product or a sequence; assessing whether it is a transferrable technology; longevity.
  • Understand the need for early stage proof-of-concept; idea validation; identifying and understanding the challenges.
  • How to document using history files; regulatory requirements and identifying and mitigating risk.
  • How to formulate initial costings for capital expenditure; viability; health economics analysis; skills matrix and implementing the right team.
  • How engage your project further and convert your project into a language funders can engage with

This course will be delivered by Richard Hall, Managing Director, Pd-m International Ltd.

In 2005 Richard founded Pd-m, a product design and manufacture consultancy based in Ripon, North Yorkshire. The business comprises a multi-discipline team of designers, engineers and manufacturers. Around 70% of the work is based in the medical technologies and healthcare sector. The range of products the Pd-m team have worked with include arthroscopy, MND disease, bowel cancer diagnostics, abdominal retraction platform, shoulder surgery, catheters, obstetric forceps, dental, digital health and wearable technologies. Since being established Pd-m have won several innovation awards and been featured in the media.
