The 8th Stirling Annual August Translation Studies Research Events 2021, chaired by Dr Saihong Li, feature eight invited talks, over four days, on Wednesdays in August. The events are free, and you are very welcome to join us.

The first event will be opened by Professor Ricardo Muñoz, MC2 Lab, Università di Bologna, Italy.

The aim of this lecture is twofold: on the one hand, it aims to challenge received views on translation as problem solving within cognitive translation and interpreting studies (CTIS), and to outline an alternative approach that calls for tapping and investigating the whole translation process—and not (only) problem solving. To do so, I will (1) offer a review of the concepts of problem and problem solving in psychology. Then I will (2) discuss several approaches to problem and problem solving in translation and outline the troubles of these models. I will then (3) focus on the operationalizations of translation problem-solving constructs and discuss how the traditional use of pauses as an indicator of problem-solving stances in translation is troublesome. On the other hand, I will  outline an alternative approach to translation as problem-solving from a cognitive translatological perspective. I will suggest we should approach translation as a kind of constrained production of texts led by creative imitation. The overarching constrain is the existence of one or several source texts to which an intertextual relationship of identity is assumed. Such a shift in perspective, I will suggest, calls for an updated research agenda in CTIS based on considering the whole translation process, rather than solely focusing on problem solving, along the lines laid down by cognitive translatology.

Ricardo Muñoz Martín has been a freelance translator since 1987, ATA certified for English-Spanish in 1991. He studied at the universities of Valencia and Granada (Spain), Notthingham (UK), Munich (Germany), and Santa Barbara (CA), before he was granted a PhD from UC Berkeley in 1993. He lectured at seven American and Spanish universities before he joined the Department of Interpreting & Translation of the University of Bologna, Italy. There, he directs the Laboratory for Multilectal Mediated Communication & Cognition (MC2 Lab), devoted to the empirical research thereof from the perspective of Cognitive Translatology—a situated cognition framework within Cognitive Translation & Interpreting Studies. As a visiting scholar or guest speaker, he has travelled widely in Europe, North and Latin America and China. Prof Muñoz is also a member of the TREC and HAL networks and co-editor of the journal Translation, Cognition & Behavior.
