Session outline:

This one day training is designed to be an introduction to the growing body of writers, thinkers and practitioners who are increasingly conceptualising challenging behaviours in children (and adults) as being a consequence of early trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).

The first part of the day will focus on understanding the impact of trauma on the developing brain using the work of Bessel van der Kolk, Dan Siegel, Stephen Porges, Dan Hughes, Bruce Perry and many others as we explore seeing children’s behaviour as adaptive survival behaviours rather than defiant or oppositional.

The second part of the day will focus on what Trauma-Informed Practice looks like in a variety of contexts and what adjustments we may need to make in our practice to incorporate the new understanding of trauma and ACEs. We will also look at the Attachment, Regulation and Competency (ARC) framework as an example of an organising strategy for trauma informed practice. We will pay particular attention to the impact of working in trauma saturated environments on front line professionals.

About Kati:

Kati is a registered social worker (Social Work England) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (BABCP). She is also a Systemic Practitioner, with training in Theraplay, Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and is currently working towards licencing in Systems Centred Theory.

Kati has 25 years of experience working in residential childcare and specialist child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) as well as specialist provision for young people with complex trauma. Kati has also been the manager of a therapeutic team for young people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) within a charity.

She is a licenced ARC (Attachment, Regulation and Competency) trainer, licenced by the Boston Trauma Centre, USA. Kati has been working to introduce trauma informed practice into schools, residential care, foster care, youth offending and adolescent psychiatric in patient services and CAMHS teams in locations throughout the UK. Kati is currently working with Hull and North Humber NHS Trust, Hertfordshire County Council, Camden, Westminster, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and independent fostering organisations in Coventry, Luton and London.
