🌱 Back to Basics – What is Trauma Informed Practice
For all professionals wanting to become more trauma informed in the way they work. You must be a professional, all are welcome as all experiences will be valuable.

Format: Online or in person
Sessions: 4 sessions of 2 hours each
Note: Resources and handouts will be shared with all participants after each session to support ongoing learning and application.
Session 1: Introduction to Trauma
Aim: Introduce participants to trauma and its effects to provide a foundational understanding of how trauma impacts individuals. Participants will explore the psychological and physiological responses to trauma and consider how trauma may affect behaviour, relationships, and daily functioning.
Outcomes: Participants will be able to define trauma, understand basic nervous system responses, and reflect on how trauma may present in themselves and others.
Activities: Presentation, group discussion, and reflection exercises to consider personal and professional observations of trauma.
Session 2: Trauma Informed Principles
Aim: Introduce core trauma informed principles and enable participants to recognise trauma informed approaches in practice. Participants will explore how principles such as safety, trust, choice, collaboration, and empowerment support safe and effective interactions.
Outcomes: Participants will increase their knowledge of key frameworks and principles and understand how they can be applied in everyday practice.
Activities: Trainer examples, small group discussion, and reflective exercises on how principles are applied in real life.
Session 3: Applying Trauma Informed Practice
Aim: Provide opportunities to practice trauma informed strategies in everyday interactions using case scenarios. Participants will explore strategies for responding effectively and safely to trauma related behaviours in a variety of settings.
Outcomes: Participants will gain increased confidence in providing safe and supportive interactions and applying trauma informed principles in practice.
Activities: Case studies, reflective exercises, group discussion, and practice of response strategies.
Session 4: Consolidation and Next Steps
Aim: Reflect on learning from previous sessions and identify key takeaways and plans for ongoing trauma informed practice. Participants will consider how to continue integrating trauma informed approaches into their work and personal interactions.
Outcomes: Participants will develop a clear understanding of how to continue applying trauma informed approaches and identify practical steps for ongoing learning and implementation.
Activities: Group reflection, sharing of insights, and planning next steps for continued trauma informed practice.
