The workshop is interactive and engaging way for Journalists to improve their trauma awareness and their skills around interviewing victims.

Do you feel comfortable reporting on victims, abuse survivors, people who are distressed, grieving or going through a tough emotional time? How may sensitivity and respect look to your interviewees? Do you feel equipped to handle them and the potential emotional impact on your wellbeing? Do you worry about making things worse for your interviewees?We can often be working with victims, survivors and contributors who are hurting. When done well, these stories can be both impactful and rewarding. The workshop is interactive, engaging and chatty. It allows you to:<ul><li>Become more trauma aware</li><li>Be empowered with skills you’ll know to be good practice</li><li>Learn appropriate techniques for approaching people, building relationships and interviewing them sensitively</li><li>Listen to what your interviewees may need from you via film clips with people who spoke to journalists at tough times in their lives. They share what helped and whatharmed.</li><li> Insight from seasoned journalists including Louis Theroux</li><li> Share your experience, expertise and observations with each other</li><li>Look after yourself when being exposed to difficult emotional stories</li></ul>

A﻿bout the workshop leaderJo Healey is the author of Trauma Reporting, A Journalist’s Guide to Covering Sensitive Stories. She has covered people&#x27;s highly sensitive stories for more than thirty years for newspapers, radio and for BBC TV as a senior news journalist. She trains journalists and media staff worldwide. She has worked with many news organisations, among them BBC, BFBS, NUJ, Thomson Reuters Foundation, Reach plc, British Red Cross, Imagine Documentaries, European Broadcasting Union. She’s delivered lectures and key notes in the UK, US and Europe. and authored the UNESCO brief: Safety of Journalists Covering Trauma and Distress: Do No Harm.
