Trust and Abusability: Centering peoples’ safety in technology developments

If you care about peoples’ safety, you should care about abusability and trust. At this event, we present resources to help you do this.

If you care about security, you should care about peoples’ safety. And if you care about peoples’ safety, you should care about abusability and trust. Northumbria and Oxforford University researchers have worked with the Coalition Against Stalkerware and EndTab to develop resources to help us design technologies and digital systems that take the very real risks of technology-mediated abuse into consideration. At this virtual event, we will launch our ‘Trust and Abusability Toolkit’. This toolkit includes findings from a research project where we have worked with 20 experts on technology-mediated abuse, violence-prevention, security, data justice, advocacy for victim-survivors, and other related fields - working in the technology industry, third sector support services, and academia. This toolkit also includes a number of resources aimed at advocates and supporters of victim-survivors, technology workers and companies, as well as teachers and facilitators of learning who train future advocates and designers. We invite technology workers, designers, and technologists; advocates and supporters of people who have experienced technology-mediated violence; and researchers, students, and facilitators of learning who study the development of technologies; policymakers working on online safety, digital economy, internet health, and other safety-related topics; and anyone else who is interested in learning more about technologies and how we can design them in ways that take into consideration peoples’ safety.
