Two Day Sound System is a group exhibition reflecting on the cultural and aesthetic legacies of a recent installation by a group of artists in Notting Hill Carnival. The works were intervened whilst installed on various days, with Alvaro Barrington’s sprawling project taking place across Powis Square to Brunel Estate, to Mandy El-Sayegh’s canvas heavy installation in Talbot Road with two additional artists who’s works were sadly lost to it’s own form of gentrification with Gaz’s Rock and Blues covering up the works and putting on an Aquatic themed event which had nothing to do with Notting Hill Carnival and did it’s best to put a kibosh on black culture. Other struggles and unsettling events took place during the placement of El-Sayegh’s works with one work being torn by a disgruntled graffiti artist who said ‘you’re covering up my shit’ pretty apt and later an unfortunate encounter with a deranged crackhead who accused the HHS staff of stealing his imaginary cocktail and for one staff member to have to take him on a voyage to find him another drink whilst the artist and one remaining staff deinstalled peacefully. Notting Hill Carnival was away for 2 years, but was back in full force this year and we as an organisation felt the need to take the risk and encourage the community to get involved even if it wasn’t supported by the council. The exhibition transforms the space into a re-imagined rendition of the installations at NHC from the perspectives of artists living and working in the borough by bringing home the intervened works and also video documentation of the day. The exhibition celebrates the ways in which music culture was and is a means for making home, and for finding community and connection across cultures and generations.
