UCL Extreme Citizen Science

The final event of this two-year ERASMUS+ programme to improve participation of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Digital Actions

<p>The challenges of COVID-19 affected all sectors of human activity. Due to governmental restrictions, most people had to digitally connect to work, learn, socialise and access information and other basic services. In this context, digital participation and digital activism gained growing recognition by providing many people with online spaces to connect with like-minded people, and identify and find solutions to societal challenges caused by or during the pandemic. </p><p><a href="https://heidiproject.eu/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">HEIDI</a> is a two-year ERASMUS+ project coordinated by UCL Geography’s Extreme Citizen Science group that aims to improve the ability of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to support community-driven knowledge enhancement and action and promote their role in social change. We aim to address three main challenges: </p><ul><li>Improve awareness of Digital Action (DA) and its societal impacts to encourage its more wide adoption and utilisation; </li><li>Understand the needs of all stakeholders involved in DA to support the more effective design and utilisation of bottom-up DA; </li><li>Improve relevant DA skills and subsequently enable key players as well as members of the wider public to more effectively utilise bottom-up DA to achieve social change. </li></ul><p>Over these two years, we ran a total of 101 events and engaged over 3,000 people from various stakeholder groups to raise awareness, share experiences, and discuss challenges and lessons learned, as well as needs and requirements from future DA. Come and join us in HEIDI’s final event to be held on May 30 and 31st, 2023, to commemorate the journey of this two-year programme.</p>

<h2>Day 1 “Celebrating digital action in higher education institutions” - 30th May 2023, 4PM (UK time)</h2><p>Successful Digital Action initiatives are happening around the world to solve diverse problems. The experience and lessons learned from these initiatives in the broader digital participation context can support, inspire and strengthen digital action processes. Therefore, this day will focus on showcasing some renowned initiatives like HackZurich, NASA Space Challenge App, and SciStarter, celebrating their achievements and also hearing about their challenges and how they have overcome them. We will finish the day projecting the short film “Digital Services at HEIs to Support Digital Action for Social Change" </p><h3>Speakers:</h3><ul><li>Darlene Cavalier (SciStarter.org Founder)</li><li>Stefan von Rohr (HackZurich Project Manager)</li><li>Yasha Moz and Bridgette Johnson (NASA International Space Apps Challenge Global Organizing Team member  and Global Community Manager, respectively)</li></ul><h2>Day 2 “Inspiring digital action in higher education institutions” -  31st May 2023, 4PM (UK time)</h2><p>In HEIDI, we believe in the power of improving awareness to enable key actors, such as Higher Education Institutions, to be more resilient and agile and to better embrace bottom-up digital action to achieve social change. Through these two years, we paid particular attention to identifying these challenges, understanding the needs and requirements for HEIs and subsequently offering opportunities to upskill HE staff and students. </p><p>This day will be focused on sharing HEIDI’s outcomes under its five key Intellectual Outputs (IOs). We will also have a session with participants from the audience, sharing their experiences with DA and why they have gotten involved with DA initiatives.
