Event description
What role can different forms of listening play in developing environmental understanding, empathy, communication, action and justice?

About this Event

Now, more than ever, we need to nurture environmentally concerned communities. We are therefore very pleased to invite you to join us for the 2020 UK & Ireland Soundscape Community (UKISC) network meeting.

Hosted at the Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts at the University of Sussex, the day will include a mix of discussion and presentations but is primarily a chance to meet each other, exchange ideas and network across geographic and intellectual spaces.

To inspire conversation and exchange we invite proposals for short presentations - although it is by no means necessary, you are also welcome to come along and listen and engage in more direct conversations with each other.

As a community we are concerned with the creative and scientific study of the social, aesthetic, cultural, and ecological aspects of the sonic environment. In particular at this meeting we ask: What role can different forms of listening play in developing environmental understanding, empathy, communication, action and justice?

Presentation proposals

Presentations can be in any style (talk, short performance, sharing of work etc.) but should be informative & engaging, with the idea of sharing & inspiring practice and research in acoustic ecology including soundscape ecology and ecoacoustics. Cultural, ecological, aesthetic, technical, political, scientific, legislative etc. concerns all welcome. Proposals will be selected by the current UKISC board according to relevance, quality, diversity and complementarity.

The UKISC network meeting is part of the 2020 Festival of Music and Ideas: Hildegard Westerkamp & Acoustic Ecologies. Jan 29th - 31st

Hildegard Westerkamp (1946-) is a soundmaker, teacher and thinker who is celebrated today as the Mother of Acoustic Ecology - the study of the sonically mediated, reciprocal relationships between between humans, other animals and environments. Westerkamp’s pioneering musical works and writing at the intersections of environmentalism, acoustic communication, radio arts, listening practices and soundwalking activate an awareness of sound as a decisive dimension of the world, an idea that underpins, and is transforming contemporary thinking across social, political, artistic and scientific practices of environmental respect and concern.

Acoustic Ecologies celebrates Hildegard Westerkamp’s vision of the artist/composer as a crafts person, trained in all disciplines of sound, and as someone entirely connected to and useful in the real world; Acoustic Ecologies explores the role of listening in nurturing environmental understanding, empathy, communication and action.

Confirmed artists, speakers and workshop leaders include: Hildegard Westerkamp, Leah Barclay, Angus Carlyle, Yolande Harris, Anja Kangeisser, Annie Mahtani and Jez Riley French, Hanna Tuulikki and Voces del Bosque.

Costs

This meeting - as the whole network - is organised for the love of it, without funding. In the spirit of transparency, there are two key costs: If we want the UKISC to be affiliated with WFAE we need to pay a subscription per person, per year. In order to use the venue we need to guarantee a minimum takings at the cafe (which has great coffee, salads, soups, sandwiches).

We embrace diversity of all kinds in this community and recognise that people have different financial capacity and suggest a price of £20 and £10 for salaried and unsalaried people. This fee covers your membership to UKISC, an associate of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology.

We really look forward to see-hearing you all in February.
