Understanding Complex Behaviour

Understanding Complex Behaviour

Ormidale Sports PavilionBrodick, North Ayrshire
Tuesday, May 19  •  3:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Overview

This workshop will help practitioners to understand behaviour through a neurodevelopmental and sensory lens.

Understanding Complex Behaviour

The purpose of this workshop is to support the understanding of complex behaviours which will enable practitioners to understand that all behaviour is a form of communication and the way in which we respond can have either a positive or negative impact on a situation. We aim to empower practitioners by providing underpinning knowledge to understand the link between behaviours, feelings and needs. This will enable them to take a needs-based approach when implementing strategies within their role.

Aims

  • Understand complex behaviour through a neurodevelopmental and sensory lens
  • Explain window of tolerance and Flipping Your Lid (Dan Siegal)
  • Recognise how alexithymia, sensory processing and unmet needs impact behaviour
  • Identify triggers and chains of events leading to distress or meltdown
  • Use preventative strategies to reduce escalation
  • Respond supportively and safely during meltdowns
  • Shift from “why is this behaviour happening?” to “what is this child communicating?”
