Understanding Curating

Bedford Square Festivalis based in the heart of London with more than 35 free arts and cultural events hosted by the Paul Mellon Centre, Architectural Association, New College for Humanities, Sotheby's Institute of Art and Bloomsbury Publishing.This year's festival takes place between 3 - 6 July and celebrates the artistic, cultural and literary institutions who reside on Bedford Square.

Talk with Dr Lilian Cameron Sotheby's Institute of Art, 30 Bedford Square
Curating is one of the most talked about professions in the art world, but for many the realities of this career and field of expertise are unclear. This talk will address the role of the curator today, addressing key developments and changes to the profession in the public sector. It will also touch on the history of curating, the exciting developments of the late twentieth-century before honing in on contemporary challenges, trends and the daily realities of curating in and outside the art museum. How must the curator adapt to changes in the art world and artistic production?
Speaker bio Dr Cameron is Course Leader for Art Museums, Galleries and Curating at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London. Her research speciality is in gallery and museum memory environments and she has a particular interest in the ways modern and contemporary artists intervene in and converse with historic or traditional gallery spaces. She also has extensive experience in museum and gallery education and a research interest in socially engaged and participatory art practice. Her BA (Hons) is in history of art, literature and museum studies. She has taught at the University of Melbourne and the University of East Anglia. Lilian has worked in galleries and museums throughout London and the UK, including Tate Modern and Britain and the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, University of East Anglia.
