Dr Elizabeth Shea is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with 25 years of experience working in the field of avoidant and restricted eating in autistic individuals. She has completed research in this area, published two commissioned books and her work has featured in documentaries on both BBC and ITV. She is an nationally recognised speaker across the UK and Ireland and regularly trains groups of professionals, parents and carers in how to manage these eating patterns in autistic people. Dr Shea works with organisations such as the National Autistic Society and Scottish Autism and is the Clinical Lead for an all-age Neurodevelopmental service in a NHS health trust in the West Midlands. She is currently writing her 3rd book on pica and rumination disorder in autism.Dr Shea consistently receives feedback that her talks and training sessions are accessible, enjoyable, informative and relevant to both professional practice and parenting.

What the session will cover:

  • Presentation of eating disorders in autism/neurodivergence including anorexia nervosa/bulimia nervosa & Avoidant and Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
  • Prevalence and etiology or causal factors
  • Current evidence-based treatment approaches
  • Good practice examples

Information will be presented using a combination of lived experience/case studies, research and clinical practice evidence.
