Understanding Sensory Processing

Understanding Sensory Processing

Online event
Thursday, June 11  •  7 PM - 9 PM GMT+1
Overview

Covering topics such as understanding the challenges faced by children and young people who struggle with sensory regulation.

Join us for a lively, practical session that opens up the world of sensory processing and how it shapes the experiences of children and young people. We’ll explore the full sensory system — including the often‑overlooked proprioceptive, vestibular and interoceptive senses — and look at why some young people struggle with sensory regulation. You’ll learn how to spot the difference between sensory overwhelm/meltdowns and tantrums, and discover how sensory challenges can link to anxiety and emotional distress.

We’ll also unpack what happens to executive functioning during sensory overload, explore the purpose and benefits of stimming, and discuss gentle, supportive ways to guide stimming if it becomes unsafe. Throughout the session, you’ll pick up practical techniques for helping regulate the sensory system and supporting children and young people to feel calmer, more grounded and more in control.
