Speaker: Adam Keeley, Data Analytics Team Manager, LIDA

Summary: Research at the University of Leeds using personal and sensitive data has long benefitted from LASER, a Trusted Research Environment managed and run by Leeds Institute for Data Analytics (LIDA). With the option to restrict access to physical Safe Rooms that were previously only available from within LIDA’s offices in Leeds, projects subject to these physical controls can now be accessed from Safe Rooms across the UK through the SafePod Network.

By joining the network, data in LASER subject to physical access control is now available through 23 SafePods across the UK. With Safepods located in Universities from Exeter, to Dundee, to Ulster researchers will no longer have to travel to the University of Leeds to access this data, reducing effort, costs and time and opening exciting new opportunities for research.

LIDA also provides a new contribution to the growing improvement for secure data research in the UK by becoming the first Trusted Research Environment, on the SafePod Network, to provide users with the additional capability to deposit their own highly protected data on its platform. This also enables organisations and researchers to avoid the considerable time, cost and infrastructure requirements needed to set up their own environment and promises to make many new sources of data available for important research that will benefit the public.

Join this short webinar to find out how you can use LASER and the SafePod network, as an existing or a new user.

New to LASER?

LASER is a cloud-based Trusted Research Environment (TRE) that provides a secure environment for researchers to store, handle, process and analyse sensitive and confidential data.

The platform is DSPT and ISO27001 accredited and supports AI and machine learning focussed research, at the University of Leeds, with end-to-end support from the in-house Data Analytics Team.

In 2023, LASER and the Data Analytics Team served over 200 users, 70+ projects, more than £70million of research and more than 7TB of data (that's the equivalent of 5 months of continuous HD video!)

On average, a project on LASER costs just £1,000 a year and of the 60+ projects in 2023…

  • 1/2 cost less than £50/month
  • 1/3 cost less than £25/month
