Event description

Description

Register for the first ever Unsupported Temporary Accommodation Conference, focusing on homelessness in some of the most hidden places in England and how we can work together towards a collaborative solution. This conference follows a year after a Parliamentary Event launching Justlife's latest report, The Journey Home: Building a solution to unsupported temporary accommodation, published with the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) North, which highlighted how living in unsupported temporary accommodation affects residents’ health and wellbeing and put forward recommendations for change. Most importantly, this event will be put into context with the Homeless Reduction Act and pull together existing good practice from across the country.

Why you should attend:
There are more people stuck living in unsupported temporary accommodation than people rough sleeping in England. It is a huge national problem which has been hidden for far too long and needs immediate action. This forward thinking event will explain why change is so crucial and how by working together we can make real progress to sustainable change. Don't miss out on the chance to change thousands of people's lives living in unsupported temporary accommodation, you can make a difference by registering for this event today.

Plan of the day:

  • Hear from a diverse group of speakers (Environmental Health, Landlords, Residents, Local Authorities) to understand the gravity of unsupported temporary accommodation and why tackling this hidden form of homelessness nationally and collaboratively is crucial

  • Hear best practice from around the country on how different methods have been implemented to make a real difference to those living in unsupported temporary accommodation

  • Participate in collaborative workshops which aims to understand what unsupported temporary accommodation is, what the main issues and solutions are and how to collaboratively measure success

  • Launch the National Temporary Accommodation Board Network, which will be the vehicle holding together the change-making activities for unsupported temporary accommodation across England.

We hope you can come so please save the date, an agenda will follow. Keep up to date with the conference, such as announcements of guest speakers, by following the #notcounteddontcount or #NCDC twitter handles.

FAQs

What is Unsupported Temporary Accommodation?

Homeless households living in unsupported temporary accommodation are hidden and forgotten in one of the darkest corners of the private rented market. They are 'unsupported' due to the limited access to statutory or non-statutory support to find alternative accommodation, and 'temporary' because they have no permanent residency status, no tenancy and very few rights.

Why is change needed?

Once people enter unsupported temporary accommodation they experience a sharp decline in health and wellbeing. Despite this, there remains a staggeringly small amount of attention and resource placed on unsupported temporary accommodation which affects thousands of people in England.

Find out more:

Justlife Foundation and IPPR North have published various reports focusing on what unsupported temporary accommodation is like, how living in this type of accommodation affects the people living there and what can be done to make people's stay as short, safe and healthy as possible.
