USS: Step Forward on Climate

ShareAction is a registered UK charity promoting responsible movement. We support groups of pension savers to open dialogue with their schemes and to make their voices heard in the investment system. One group ShareAction has supported for many years are members of USS with an interest in the ethics of the scheme’s investments.As a representative union, the University and College Union (UCU) acts collectively on behalf of its members. It is the organisation with the formal responsibility for representing USS members’ views within the formal USS structures.

Event for members of the Universities Superannuation Scheme

Climate change presents a real and pressing threat: to people, the planet and pension savings. Last December, 195 countries adopted a legally binding deal to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees. In the wake of these unprecedented commitments at the COP21 talks in Paris, come and find out what your pension scheme is doing to reduce its carbon footprint and prepare for a low-carbon future. 
Over the course of the evening we’ll hear from Bill Galvin, Chief Executive of USS, Roger Gray, Chief Investment Officer of USS, and David Russell, co-head of Responsible Investment at USS, about the steps the scheme is taking to ensure its investments are sustainable for the long-term – both financially and environmentally. 
We’ll also hear from expert members of USS in a wide-ranging discussion on what more the scheme, and pension funds more generally, can do to promote a low-carbon future. 
Panellists:
Professor Myles Allen - Head of the Climate Dynamics Group at Oxford University's Department of Physics, co-director of the Oxford Martin Programme on resource stewardship and a lead author on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Professor Allen's research focuses on how human and natural influences on climate contribute to observed climate change and risks of extreme weather and in quantifying their implications for long-range climate forecasts.
Professor Kevin Anderson - Professor of Energy and Climate Change in the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at the University of Manchester, Deputy Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. Professor Anderson is research active with recent publications in Royal Society journals and Nature.
Professor Joanna Haigh - Co-Director of the Grantham Institute at Imperial College, former President of the Royal Meteorological Society and a lead author on the IPCC. Professor Haigh's scientific interests include radiative transfer in the atmosphere, climate modelling, radiative forcing of climate change and the influence of solar irradiance variability on climate.
Professor Jimmy Donaghey - Professor of Industrial Relations at the University of Warwick, Jimmy is currently chair of the UCU Pensions Committee, the Superannuation Working Group, and Chair of the USS side to the Joint Negotiating Committee.  He was recently elected to the UCU National Executive Committee to serve from 2016-2018.

Professor Juliane Reinecke - Professor of Organization Studies at Warwick Business School, University of Warwick. She is a Fellow at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, and Research Fellow at the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge. Her research interests include governance in global supply chains, sustainability, labour rights and social movements.
