Uta Makura Walk
Event Information
Description
This artist-led walk, part of the Travels in a Paper Coat exhibition at APT Gallery (28 June/15 July), is in the spirit of Matsuo Basho’s famous travelogue The Narrow Road to the Deep North. After meeting at APT, we will set out to visit literary and artitic landmarks (Uta Makura) around Deptford, just as Basho visited sights that had inspired poets before him, so they would inspire him too, a sort of conscious road-building between past and present. With our rapidly changing cityscape, this trained openness to the past, its translation through art & writing, are vital to a community’s well-being. So our Uta Makura walkers will be encouraged to write Haiku poems or draw sketches, and some of these works will be displayed in the Haiku Creek installation in APT Gallery.
