A working-class photographer captures the impact of Thatcherism on the north of England but is unable to escape the poverty and inequality she exposed. Driven by a commitment to document the impact of deindustrialisation on working class communities in Northeast England in the 1970s and 1980s, Tish Murtha used her camera to expose societal inequality. She felt she had an obligation to the people and problems within her local environment, and that documentary photography could highlight and challenge the social disadvantages that she herself had suffered. However, despite early acclaim for her work, she was unable to make a living from photography and died in poverty. Having studied Visual Communication, specialising in Photography at The Glasgow School of Art she moved to London where she gained a wide range of experience working with established photographers and directors. Working with renowned photographer Emma Summerton for several years she learnt how to create cinematic lighting and the beauty of imagery through Emma’s unique style. Leading her to have an acute aesthetic eye to go alongside her passion for creating compelling human stories as a film editor.Lindsay has a wide range of experience in editing feature film documentaries, factual series for broadcast, multiscreen films for National Museums, fashion films and TV commercials. She has a strong sense of narrative and structure.Her latest edit the feature film ’Tish’ was the opening film of the 30th edition of Sheffield DocFest 2023. ‘Tish’ is a moving portrait of a social documentary photographer and trailblazer Tish Murtha, who dedicated her life to documenting the lives of working-class communities in North East England.Lindsay is currently editing the feature documentary ‘Since Yesterday’ which celebrates the songs and stories of Scotland's Girl Bands. This is due for release later in 2024.She is an associate member of British Film Editors and part of BAFTA Connect’s unique community developing opportunities for a wide network in the industry.
