What does 'curriculum' mean in early years settings and how can practitioners and teachers feel confident in explaining their curriculum to others while maintaining the child-centred approaches that are at the heart of the early years? In this session we will examine curriculum in the context of the early years, looking at how you can link your work in the different areas of learning to what your curriculum looks like. The event will look at what 'curriculum' in the early years means and how it differs from a subject-based curriculum taught in school, particularly in light of the overarching principles of the EYFS.

We will examine how colleagues in other phases can link their curriculum to the work done in the early years, exploring how subjects taught in other phases build on concepts, skills and attributes embedded in the first five years. We will look at five different options for discussing, defining and explaining your curriculum, with an emphasis on how to meet all your children's needs and offer a rich, diverse, inclusive and child-centred curriculum. This event will help you and your staff team think through options, as well as helping inspectors and colleagues understand why you do what you do and how it links to later learning. The key aim of this event is to cut through confusion and help you feel more confident about describing and valuing your practice. We will look at how you might do this in a setting where planning is mainly 'in the moment' and how you might use topics or themes instead of (or as well as) an 'in the moment' approach.

This event offers a great starting point for talking with staff about how you intend your curriculum to work, how you put it in place with your children, and how you can demonstrate the impact on children's outcomes to colleagues, parents/carers and others.
