Girls into Coding(GIC)  is a not-for-profit organisation, a Community Interest Company (CIC). We are a mother(Helene) and daughter(Avye, 16) run social enterprise. GIC provides learning opportunities for girls between the ages of 10 and 14. We’ve created workshops and education events to immerse young people in a range of STEM activities. STEM is an educational programme developed to prepare young students for further education in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM also aims to encourage inquiring minds, logical reasoning, and collaboration skills.We are driven to create opportunities to engage girls to consider STEM education and careers through hands-on workshops and events.

<h2>Virtual Girls into Coding #18!</h2>GIRLS! THE TECH COMMUNITY NEEDS YOU! THIS EVENT IS ORGANISED ESPECIALLY FOR YOU! COME AND JOIN US ONLINE AND GET INVOLVED!I am delighted to invite you to our VIRTUAL &quot;Girls Into Coding &quot; event via Zoom! It&#x27;s a free event. Choose 1 of our 5 exciting workshops. There will also be lightning talks to inspire &amp; encourage girls aged 10 -14 to get involved in tech. Each participant can only book one workshop because they will run simultaneously.You will be able to explore online coding activities, online robotics, 3D Design, electronics, and physical computing using the BBC Micro: bit (tiny computers), This is a fantastic opportunity to use Python (text-based language) and to get some hands-on making time from the comfort of your home PLEASE READ CAREFULLYIF YOU BOOK MORE THAN ONE TICKET PER PARTICIPANT, YOUR BOOKING WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY CANCELLED.THE 5 WORKSHOPS BELOW WILL RUN SIMULTANEOUSLY - THEREFORE EACH PARTICIPANT SHOULD ONLY BOOK ONE WORKSHOPWorkshop #1: Mechanical EyesIMPORTANT NOTE: For this workshop, Girls Into Coding (GIC)will send a kit to the participants prior to the session. GIC will provide a postage-paid envelope for the return of the kit once the event is over. Please note that this particular workshop will only be available to UK RESIDENTS.Build a pair of mechanical eyes. Add a Microbit to control the motors that move the eyes. Add another Microbit to give you remote control. Use MakeCode blocks to make the eyes look around the room and blink!<ul><li>Material needed: A computer (Windows or Mac, but NOT a tablet) with one or preferably two available USB port</li></ul><ul><li>Experience: No coding experience required</li></ul>Workshop #2: Grabber Robot With Micro:bit IMPORTANT NOTE: For this robotics workshop, Girls Into Coding (GIC)will send a kit to the participants prior to the session. GIC will provide a postage-paid envelope for the return of the kit once the event is over. Please note that this particular workshop will only be available to UK RESIDENTS.For this robotics workshop, Girls Into Coding (GIC) will send a kit to the participants prior to the session. Please note that this particular workshop will only be available to UK RESIDENTS.Build a robot powered by a Microbit that can be used as a grabber.You will build the robot, adding different components, and wiring it all up. Then you’ll program the robot using Microsoft MakeCode.Materials needed:A computer with access to the internet; the kit &amp; instruction sheet will be sent to the participants prior to the session.Experience:Basic working knowledge of block-based code but beginners are welcome! They will be guided by instruction sheets and a live tutorial &amp; demo.Workshop #3: Learning to move a robot armIMPORTANT NOTE: For this workshop, Girls Into Coding (GIC)will send a kit to the participants prior to the session. GIC will provide a postage-paid envelope for the return of the kit once the event is over. Please note that this particular workshop will only be available to UK RESIDENTS.This is going to be a fun activity building a 3D printed robot arm and learning how to make it move. You will receive the robot arm in the post! On our journey, we will learn about all its components and what they do. We will learn about how to position the robot arm using code (this is called Kinematics), and then we will code the robot arm so that we can experience and understand how this works in real life! We will be using micropython for this activity.Level: Intermediate with basic knowledge of PythonMaterial needed: A computer with an internet browser (Google Chrome is best, NO TABLET)Workshop #4: Physical Computing with Circuit Playground ExpressIMPORTANT NOTE: For this workshop, Girls Into Coding (GIC)will send a kit to the participants prior to the session. GIC will provide a postage-paid envelope for the return of the kit once the event is over. Please note that this particular workshop will only be available to UK RESIDENTS.Use capacitive touch to make music with the Circuit Playground Express and a DIY cardboard keyboard, and code musical tones onto the board using Adafruit Makecode.Material needed: A computer with available USB port Experience: Beginners are welcome!Workshop #5: Exploring 3D DesignThis is an exciting remote learning workshop for bright young minds where they get to compare and assess some of the best freely available 3D Design software.Participants will quickly get up to speed on core skills, best practices, workflow process and required tasks to become a successful 3D Designer.Participants will understand and use parametric modelling tools (shapes &amp; measurements) and free form modelling tools (moulding &amp; shaping digital clay). If you have done this workshop before and you want to join again, you are welcome! We will make sure you work on new projects!<ul><li>Materials needed: </li></ul>- Personal Notepad to take down important Notes, Sketches, and Observations.- Personal Laptop. No experience required!LIGHTNING TALKS: Akua OPong - &quot;My Journey into STEM&quot;Akua works as a Senior Analyst within the Corporate Technology team at London Stock Exchange Group.She currently holds active membership in the following networks: BEING (Black Employees), Ability (Resource Lead), WIN (Women’s Network, Community Lead), Wellbeing (Mental Health Champion) and UK Charity Committee (Volunteering Champion) alongside her day job in Technology.Outside her work environment, Akua is a Team London ambassador, mentor for Cajigo and Inclusive Careers, charity volunteer, a keen sports volunteer for Netball England and British Athletics.Sam Hoh -&quot;Designing Solutions&quot;Sam Hoh is an engineer that loves designing and building robots and figuring out how mechanisms work. After graduating as a mechanical engineer and working for 3 years as a mechanical design engineer creating bespoke machines for industrial automation, she decided to head to the UK to do a Masters in Robotics in Bristol. She is currently working on soft wearable robotics for rehabilitation at the University of Bristol, where she hopes to help make a difference in peoples&#x27; lives. In her free time she tends to her garden (hoping to eventually automate some part of it!) and volunteers with Girls into Coding to encourage young girls to participate in STEM fields.TERMS OF PARTICIPATION - IMPORTANT, PLEASE READIn order to be able to join our Girls Into Coding online event, you must comply with these 3 conditions below, otherwise, your registration will not be valid and will be cancelled.
