This seminar will examine ways in which creative and visual methods can be used in research with participants in diverse language contexts.

<p>We will focus on research approaches with deaf participants who use sign language in their social and professional daily lives. As a visual language, sign language affords an accessible and inclusive communicative environment for deaf people and motivates the development of novel research methods.</p><p>This session will be led by Dai O’Brien is Associate Professor of BSL and Deaf Studies in York St John University whose research has focused on deaf space, deaf perspectives of BSL/English interpreting, and deaf radical politics, using collaborative and creative methods. In this session Dai will cover the potential of visual research in making connections with research participants. He will talk about the use of visual methods with some examples from his own work, and will also talk about the analysis of visual artefacts that are created in the process of these methods.</p>
