Visualisation of ecological data – with RAWGraphs

From 1 February to 29 February, Central Saint Martins’ Digital Innovation Season will explore and celebrate creativity in the digital space. This platform offers public talks and workshops for CSM students.The 2024 edition will focus on ‘Planetary Sensing’. This takes a ‘planetary’ perspective related to the climate crisis, social impact, and learning, teaching and research that engage cutting edge technologies like AI, IoT, wearables, and spatial computing. Rather than imagining a schism between the local and the global, a planetary perspective considers the material conditions of the planet - and how the earth understands and communicates through arrays of satellites, sensors, swarms, and servers that influence geographies, climate, and societies.

Data Visualisation : Online workshop led by Federica Fragapane.

<h3><strong>This event is for CSM Students only - please note applications are now closed.</strong></h3><p><strong></strong></p><h3>In this course, participants will learn how to create an easy-to-read information design piece around the current ecological crisis. Federica will guide you through all the steps of a data visualisation project: from the sources to the final piece.  Participants will work through steps  of the design process. You will firstly learn how to find official and reliable sources of environmental data and how to choose data that tells the stories you want to convey. Secondly, you will work through how to use and explore a dataset using Google Sheets and explore the essential shift from an information table to a visual representation.</h3><h3>Federica will share her process for finding visual inspiration to design an engaging piece that communicates multiple layers of information. Students will work with design softwares like RAWGraphs and Adobe Illustrator and then create key elements like legends and visual guides, which facilitate an effortless reading experience. </h3><h3></h3>

<p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/federicafragapane/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Federica Fragapane</a> is an independent information designer. Many of her projects have an experimental approach and are aimed at exploring the design of new visual languages and the relationship between data visualisation and people. She designed projects and data visualisations for Google, the United Nations, Scientific American, BBC Science Focus, Columbia University and La Lettura. She is co-author of the Geopolitical Atlas of Water and of Planet Earth. She is Research Associate at ODI, global think tank. She won the Fast Company Innovation by Design Awards 2021, the gold medal at the Core77 Design Awards 2018 and was awarded at the European Design Awards 2019 and 2017, Core77 Design Awards 2017 and Information is Beautiful Awards 2017 and 2014. In 2021 she won the Pierre Keller Award. </p>
