About this event

This online session will help you explore the key legal differences between a volunteer and a paid worker. Using findings from Employment Tribunals distinguishing between paid workers and volunteers, we’ll consider practical steps that organisations can take in areas such as recruitment, expenses and general management to stay within the law and ensure a volunteer is a volunteer.

This session will help you:

  • understand the factors that affect whether a person is legally a volunteer or an employee
  • understand the implications for both the organisation and the volunteer of a person being classified as an employee
  • know practical steps you can take to reduce the risk of creating an employment contract
  • know how to accommodate volunteers who may have a different legal status or are receiving benefits
  • understand your safety and security duties towards volunteers.

Who should attend:

This session is suitable for any trustee, staff member or volunteer responsible for recruiting and managing volunteers or thinking of using volunteers to support their work.

Trainer: Reetu Sood

Reetu has over a decade of experience working with community groups and social enterprises in a wide range of areas including governance, volunteer management, fundraising, business development and organisational development.
