Northern Ireland Screen and Future Screens NI, in partnership with SideQuestVR, XR Bootcamp and Digital Catapult’s Immersive Labs, invite you to join a VR Hackathon in September!SideQuest is an open platform for distributing both experimental and commercial work for the Oculus Quest and Go headsets. To find out more about SideQuest, go to <a href="https://sidequestvr.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://sidequestvr.com/</a>The main theme of the hackathon will be around touch-free solutions for a post-pandemic world, leveraging the hand tracking feature of the Oculus Quest that enables interacting in VR without physical controllers. The Hackathon will be free to enter and run over 7 days, from Thursday September 10th to Wednesday September 16th.The Hackathon attendees will have a unique opportunity to focus on prototyping hand tracking concepts. The participants will benefit from invited talks and guidance from expert mentors who have experience in the topic and that will be able to lend their expertise to the attendees. These sessions will be hosted in a mix of Zoom, Discord and social VR to take advantage of the most widely used technologies for delivery of content.Teams in attendance at the Hackathon will submit projects via SideQuestVR for consideration by the Jury. The jury, which will consist of mentors and organiser representatives, will select the best projects to be featured on the SideQuest platform. In addition, XR Bootcamp will sponsor winning teams with access to their hand tracking masterclasses.While all level of participants are welcome, we would encourage students from Universities with immersive courses and research activities, Practitioners in screen-based creative industries who are interested in getting a taste of what it takes to make immersive things, Immersive companies’ teams, VR enthusiasts who aspire to jump from consuming into making VR to take part in this Hackathon!VR Hackathon mentors:Antonia Forster: Antonia is a keynote speaker and self-taught programmer, working in the field of AR, VR, and haptics. Antonia has worked with a wide range of technologies, including VR (Oculus), AR (Android, AR Foundation, MARS), hand-tracking (Leap Motion), haptics (Ultraleap STRATOS Explore) and even unique location-specific projection systems (We The Curious planetarium, the UK’s only 3D 180° context projection space). Antonia works primarily in Unity/C#, and has shipped multiple enterprise-level solutions. Her experience also includes 3D modelling (Blender), Javascript, Python, and Machine Learning. Her passion lies in pushing the boundaries of XR technology, and demonstrating its use-cases.<a href="https://antoniaforster.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://antoniaforster.com/</a>Luca Mefisto: Luca Mefistófeles (@lucamefisto) is a seasoned Software Engineer with years of experience developing applications and experiences for the biggest energy and military corporations. He has shared his views at international universities and won several competitions, but ultimately he is just a hacker who enjoys math-rock music, making modular origami pieces and creative thinking. Previously: Kainos Software and Nortel Networks Luke is now at Hamilton Robson, where he directs engineering and develops creative tools and services using immersive, robotics and Artificial Intelligence technologies. @lukemcneice on twitter.Nicola Plant: Nicola Plant is a new media artist, researcher and developer currently working as a researcher on a project developing machine learning tools for movement interaction design in immersive media at Goldsmiths, University of London. Nicola holds a PhD in Computer Science that focuses on embodiment, non-verbal communication and expression in human interaction from Queen Mary University of London. She has an artistic practice that specialises in movement-based interactivity and motion capture, creating interactive artworks exploring expressive movement within VR.Clarice Hilton: Clarice Hilton is a creative technologist and researcher specialising in Unity and immersive artwork. She is a researcher at the University of London developing a movement based tool to intuitively design interaction in unity using machine learning. In her interdisciplinary practise she collaborates with filmmakers, dance practitioners, theatre makers and other artists to explore participatory and embodied experiences.She developed an interactive puppetry and AR touring show If Not Here… Where? with The Little Angel, Great Ormond Street Hospital. She was the creative technologist on SOMA a virtual reality experience exploring the somatic experience between the physical and the virtual in VR by Lisa May Thomas. She worked as a developer on The Collider developed by Anagram which has toured internationally at Tribeca, Venice Film Festival, IDFA Doc Lab and Sandbox Immersive Festival (best immersive artwork) and was named one of 2019 top immersive experiences by Forbes. She previously taught Interactive Storytelling and Unity at UCL on the Immersive Factual Storytelling course.Carlos Gonzalez Diaz: Carlos Gonzalez Diaz is a PhD Candidate in the Intelligent Games and Games Intelligence (IGGI) Centre for Doctoral Training at the University of York, Goldsmiths and Queen Mary universities. His research focuses on how the use of interactive machine learning in the design of movement interactions of virtual reality games can affect the player experience.During his PhD, Carlos has collaborated with Sony Interactive Entertainment R&amp;D researching on the PSVR game system as well as participated in a Google-funded project to develop an interactive machine learning framework for the Unity3D game engine. He has recently co-organised academic events, being one of the chairs for ACM CHI Play 2019 and IEEE CoG 2019.Ferhan Ozkan (Co-founder, XR Bootcamp): Ferhan Ozkan is leading the mission is to create a global ecosystem of XR innovators and utilize it for solving the challenges of industry. His influential journey started when he founded a pre-incubation center funded by World Bank, guiding 8 startups to successful industry exits. Soon afterwards, he established the digital platform Playstore.com for a telco operator distributing games of the top AAA publishers worldwide. The platform still continues to become one of the most profitable Value Added Services overall.As elected Vice-Chair of the IEEE VR/AR Standards Group, he works on bringing the industry closer, while focusing on empowering the major stakeholders with his expertise and global network. He founded XR First, a global organization which has already attracted over 410 startup clusters and 800 universities from all around the world to join on its mission of the democratization of innovation. He also initiated XR Bootcamp, world’s first bootcamp for professional upskilling focusing on VR/AR. At various conferences, he is passionately addressing to a wide range of audience sharing his vision on immersive transformation and enterprise level capacity building.Dennys Kuhnert, COO and Founder of Holonautic &amp; Roger Kung, CEO and Founder of Holonautic : Fascinated by the endless opportunities in VR, Swiss ETH graduates Roger Kung and Dennys Kuhnert founded next-gen VR studio Holonautic in 2018. Their team of seven created Holoception, a new type of hybrid VR game available on Steam and the Oculus Store and they recently released long awaited Hand Physics Lab on Sidequest. Both instructors bring diverse expertise to the table. Roger has a degree in Economics, Life Sciences, and Computer Science, while Dennys has a degree in Bioengineering. With the viral success of their interactive experiments with Oculus Quest hand tracking, they’re excited to share their knowledge and experience with you, and help push beyond the current standards of VR to build the future of spatial computing.A more detailed schedule will be emailed to the registered participants closer to the event.Requirements to participate: At least one team member needs to have access to a Oculus Quest headset or a Leap Motion device with a VR headset. The organisers will facilitate team formation around participants who have headsets, so it is possible to participate without one and contribute to team work e.g. with 3D asset creation, interaction design, paper prototyping, etc. Event start: Thursday, September 10th, 4pm BSTEvent end: Wednesday, September 16th, 6:30pm BST
