Samaritans Cymru - Our mission is to reduce the number of people who die by suicide in Wales.   We work in partnership with other agencies to achieve change locally, and inform policy decisions which have an impact on suicide risk.   We reach out to groups where there is a high risk of suicide and emotional distress. We offer a helpline service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (116 123) and a Welsh Language helpline operating 7pm-11pm daily (0808 1640123). (Sgroliwch i lawr i weld y fersiwn Gymraeg)We are excited to invite you to the online launch of our new parental mental health project where we will be releasing our new research report and discussing our recommendations for change – Waiting for Change: How can we reduce suicide and poor mental health on the parenthood journey in Wales?The core aims of our Parental Mental Health Project are to -<ul><li>reduce suicide in new parents</li><li>raise awareness of the mental health support required for anyone facing challenges on the parenthood journey and improve the outcomes for those in distress – particularly through embedding preventative measures and improving crisis care</li><li>tackle the stigma surrounding struggles in parenthood, poor mental health and suicide risk.</li></ul>Speakers will include –<ul><li>Neil Ingham &amp; Emma Gooding, Samaritans Cymru</li><li>Mark Williams, Fathers Reaching Out</li><li>Shannon Davies, Mothers Matter</li><li>Michelle Townsend, Lived Experience Advocate for perinatal mental health support drawing on her own experiences of fertility treatment and premature birth</li><li>Marc Harder, Head of Bereavement Care &amp; Hospital Liaison, Sands</li></ul>There will be time for questions and discussion at the end of the webinar. You will be sent a Zoom link for the event nearer the time.Samaritans Cymru exist to reduce the number of people who die by suicide in Wales.We are committed to helping those who are most at risk of developing poor mental health and suicidality and are strongly focused on the social determinants that affect this risk; the external factors which make life difficult for individuals and communities.The parenthood journey and the challenging experiences that accompany it can significantly impact mental health and increase the risk of suicide.There are many common experiences on this journey that are very intense and distressing and they can leave people feeling isolated, scared, low and suicidal.Despite their commonality, these experiences are often shrouded in silence and afflicted by stigma and shame.As this is an online webinar, we are luckily able to host a large audience.
