On this walk we will visit the Bishop's Palace gateway and then head towards the heart of the Solar System model and visit each planet in turn. Be prepared for a mind-blowing illustration of scale in space while enjoying this attractive Kent village. There is a rather nice country pub to relax in on your return from the outer limits of the Solar System.Otford in Kent is a charming village, just outside London, sited below the North Downs. It was home to a palace belonging to the Archbishop of Canterbury until 1537 when Henry VIII took possession of the vast four-acre building. Part of the gatehouse still survives, along with many other beautiful timber framed buildings, and a village pond that acts as a roundabout.
In 2000 an intriguing model of the solar system was created in the village - on a scale of 1:4,595,700,000. Each of the planets is represented on plinths in the relative locations they were in at the start of the millennium.
It can be a little muddy in the area between Neptune and Pluto, so boots are recommended.
The walk is about 3 miles in total.
