WCO Scything Workshop (2026)
Come learn how to scythe like a pro at our hands-on Scything Workshop!
Located in a secluded wildlife haven in the heart of Bristol, Woodcroft Community Orchard provides an idealic location to learn about scything and traditional grassland management.
The day will focus on the importance of grassland conservation using traditional scything techniques and how this is can be applied to the our community orhcard. Tutoring and guidance will be provided on how to set up and safely use a sycthe. Scythes can be provided upon request (or bring your own!). No experience required.
The day will be led by John Daw a professional ecologist with a wealth of experience and great passion for wildlife conservation and in particular wild flower meadows. John has been a member of the orchard for over 10 years and oversees the management of the wildflower meadow (and other habitats).
The day will cover:
- Welcome and introduction to the orchard and scything
- Grassland management and ecology
- Introduction to native grassland plant identification
- Introduction to the scythe and safe use
- Scything technique and movement
- Practical sycthing and hay making
Bring along your own lunch and refreshments. Scything is quite physical, so please bring plenty of water. Tea and coffee will also be provided.
Please wear comfortable but sturdy footwear and dress for the weather on the day.
