Overview

We Were Seven: A true story of fear, friendship, and finding in 1980s Luton.

When Carl was seven years old, he was told that his friend from down the street was dead. He struggled to piece-together what had happened to his playmate. But he heard frightening rumours. Rumours which made him think he was next.Today, Carl has a comfortable life and a family of his own, but he is still haunted by hazy memories which return to torment him in the form of vivid nightmares.

For thirty years, he has tried to bury the thoughts in the back of his mind. But the gnawing neurosis is too much to ignore, and he decides it’s finally time. Time to return to Luton. Time to dig up the past. Time to resolve the mystery of his dead schoolfriend.

Carl interweaves his present-day true-crime investigation with a detailed exploration of life on a council estate in the 1980s. He recalls his young life and the impact the strange tragedy had on him with raw honesty and dark humour as he seeks to unravel the mystery of his childhood friend, all while trying to reconcile who he is and where he comes from.

Will Carl be able to dig up the past and overcome the fear and confusion that have tormented him for so long?
