Overview

A day at Hilldrop finding and weaving a variety of natural materials and discussing the habitat potential of different woven structures.

Malcolm Seal has been working with willow since 1988 and produces work that is both functional and beautiful. He is inspired by the British agricultural tradition as well as elements from other European styles. Raw materials are sourced from around the Southwest with an increasing amount coming from his own willow beds at Thunderbolt Farm near Bridport.

For this workshop, you will explore the garden at Hilldrop with Malcolm to find a variety of materials and discuss the habitat potential of using each of these as woven structures.

You will learn various weaving techniques and leave with a good understanding of how to use natural materials - potentially including non-traditional materials such as bramble, nettles and bark - to add complexity and biodiversity to your garden.

Malcolm Seal is a landscape and garden consultant as well as a basketmaker who has designd and created rich, multilayered environments.

He provides inspiration and guidance as well as practical support and management for existing spaces and new projects. His woven work ranges from the domestic to the sculptural and has been seen in a variety of contexts from kitchens to cathedrals to contemporary art galleries as well as gardens and landscapes.

We will have coffee and tea at around 9.30 and the workshop starts at 10.00.

A delicious vegetarian lunch cooked on site by Fiona is provided at 1pm. Please let us know if you have any allergies or food intolerances.

Parking is available on site.

Nearest train station is Laindon and there is a mini-cab service there which can take you the short distance to Hilldrop.
