We over-estimate. We over-engineer. We over-complicate. As developers we tend to always add more (more lines of code, more tools, more overhead). But we should know: less is more. 
This evening will see three speakers sharing their stories of "less": front-end development without frameworks, and serverless architecture using Lambda functions.

<H2 CLASS="p1">Frameworkless Frontend Development</H2>
As frontend developers, we have a lot of options when we need to choose a framework for our new shining project. But there’s another option that we usually don’t consider at all: a frameworkless approach. Today it’s possible to create single page applications, even complex one, without any kind of dependency. During the talk, I will talk about our experience in extrategy using the Frameworkless technique. Most importantly I will explain how we decide the right framework or no framework at all.

<H2 CLASS="p1">Serverless in production, an experience report </H2>
In this talk Yan Cui shares his experience of migrating an existing monolithic architecture for a social network to AWS Lambda, and how it empowered a small team to deliver features quickly and how they address operational concerns such as CI/CD, logging, monitoring and config management.
This sessions draws on Yan's experience leading a team that <A HREF="https://hackernoon.com/yubls-road-to-serverless-part-1-overview-ca348370acde" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">transformed their entire architecture</A> in under 6 months, where they also managed to cut cost by over 90%, and increased production deployments from 4-6 per month to 80-100 per month. They managed this feat whilst also coming up with solutions to common operational concerns to ensure they not only run a serverless architecture in production, but they do so responsibly.

<H3>Yan Cui</H3>
Yan is an experienced engineer who has worked with AWS for near 10 years. He has been an architect and lead developer with a variety of industries ranging from investment banks, e-commence to mobile gaming. In the last 2 years he has worked extensively with AWS Lambda in production, and he has been very active in sharing his experiences and the lessons he has learnt, some of his work has even made their way into the <A HREF="https://d1.awsstatic.com/whitepapers/architecture/AWS-Serverless-Applications-Lens.pdf" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Serverless Well-Architected</A> whitepaper published by AWS.
Yan is polyglot in both spoken and programming languages, he is fluent in both English and Mandarin, and counts C#, F#, Scala, Node.js and Erlang amongst programming languages that he has worked with professionally. Although he enjoys learning different programming languages and paradigms, he still holds F# as his undisputed favourite.
Yan is a regular speaker at user groups and conferences internationally, and he is also the author of <A HREF="https://bit.ly/prod-ready-serverless" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Production-Ready Serverless</A> and a co-author of <A HREF="https://bit.ly/fsharp-deep-dives" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">F# Deep Dives</A>. In his spare time he keeps an <A HREF="http://theburningmonk.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">active blog</A> where he shares his thoughts on topics such as AWS, serverless, functional programming and chaos engineering.

Scott Smethurst
Scott’s passion for computing began when he was gifted a Commodore 64 for Christmas in 1988 and really took hold while studying Computer Science at the University of Manchester. He’s been an architect, lead developer and consultant within a variety of industries, working with organisations ranging from a multi-billion pound corporation to a failed start-up. Scott has spent most of the past 2 years designing and building several serverless architectures and has decided to start sharing some of those experiences.
