WEBdeLDN #17 - Web3 - The decentralized web
Event Information
Description
Our next meetup will be with Luke Hedger (Software Developer at JAAK) and Jason Sackey (JavaScript Developer at Wooshii).
During the evening we are going to talk about decentralisation, cryptocurrencies and blockchain, but we'll leave the hype out of the door to focus on the actual technologies and their possible applications.
We are going to learn a little bit more about what "decentralised web" means, what the decentralised applications do look like, why they need smart contracts on the blockchain to work, and how you can build your own Web3 application today.
We'll also discover (or imagine) how the use of blockchain and platforms like Holochain/Urbit can potentially change the paradigm of online dating as we know it today, moving away from the approach of centralised communications in favour of a peer-to-peer encrypted networking.
Schedule of the evening
18:30 - Doors will open. Welcoming drinks and pizza.
19:00 - Luke Hedger - Web 3.0: Ethereum and the next evolution of the Web
19:45 - Some more pizza and drinks
20:00 - Jason Sackey - Love in the age of decentralised personal computing
20:45 - End of the meetup
Web 3.0: Ethereum and the next evolution of the Web
Decentralisation, cryptocurrency and blockchain: the buzz around these topics can sometimes obscure their practicalities and potential. We must take a look both back in time and beyond the hype to understand the implications of this fascinating area of computer science. This talk will explore how a decentralised web could yield innovative ways of designing systems and building applications, and how platforms like Ethereum allow us to start experimenting with these new approaches today.
Luke Hedger
Luke is a developer working at JAAK, building a global network of IP rights and decentralised applications for the media industries.

Love in the age of decentralised personal computing
How will the distributed network revolution impact online dating? A single web developer's anticipations, speculations, and proposals; exploring a concept of a network where daters and matchmakers interact as peers, introduced not long ago in one peculiar essay.
Jason Sackey
Jason's background in hobbyist game development led him to study computer science. Then he got into professional web development. He's fascinated by the history behind computer science, and convinced that a practice of integrating old ideas with cutting-edge inventions will be crucial in tackling the challenges of the future.
