Our next meetup will be with Fabrizio Martire and Alessandro Mininno (Founders of Gummy Industries) and Scott Boms (Global Design Lead at the Facebook Analog Research Lab).

The idea of “Digital outside, analog inside” came after a visit at the Facebook offices in Brock Street. Looking at those limited-editions prints attached to every wall, so precious in their materials and manufacturing, perfect in their ideation and design. Amazing works of art out of reach for the rest of world.

Who was behind them? How could they come up with so many ideas every month? How could they keep their creativity alive? So we decided to organise this meetup and invite the creators of these posters to talk about their work.

As perfect fit for the evening, we have decided to invite also the founders of Gummy Industries, an Italian creative agency that usually mixes digital and analog world, in a unique and distinctive approach to marketing and communication campaigns.

Creativity is a blender

Online is where we spend most of our time: the internet, no doubt, is a endless source of inspiration.

Yet, the creative process behind most Gummy Industries projects has mixed sources, both online and offline.
Where should we look, to track down the roots of our projects? Probably at certain movies, comics, books, calligraphy, toys, artists, travels, foods. Which ones, and why?

This will be a conversation where we share and uncover the way our creative process works.

Imperfection Machines: The Place of Print at Facebook

The death of print and analog technologies has been greatly exaggerated. In fact, digital has paradoxically given many a new lease on life as a counterbalance to the effects of the ever accelerating digital momentum engulfing our world. At Facebook, the Analog Research Lab might be described as the company’s cultural heartbeat, but it also a unique antidote to the abundance of technology and a means through which an entirely different kind of meaning can be found. It is equally a reflection of the company’s maker spirit — a place where meaning can be found in getting your hands dirty.

This talk will lift the covers on a side of Facebook few get to experience, and demonstrate the value real-world experiences have inside an organization where such things would commonly be at odds.

Scott Boms

Scott Boms is a cross-disciplinary graphic designer from Toronto, Canada at Facebookʼs in-house design and art making studio, the Analog Research Lab in Menlo Park, California. A man who wears many hats as a designer, maker, and educator, his focus is on unlocking the natural curiosity of the internal community at Facebook through provocative and delightful creative projects that intersect social values and the cultural zeitgeist.

His work has been exhibited internationally and appeared in HOW, Fast Co, Wired, Offscreen, Tech Crunch, and he has co-authored several books, most recently, “Being Hear” with illustrator Fuchsia MacAree. He regularly speaks about design, creativity, and communications theory. Sometimes he even sleeps, though not as much as he should.
