WEBdeLDN #6 - The Evolution of Design Systems
Thu 27 April 2017, 18:30 – 21:30 BST
The sixth appointment of our monthly meetup will be with Alla Kholmatova (Independent UX and Interaction Designer) and James Ferguson (Lead Designer at Skyscanner) with Tim von Oldenburg (Senior Software Engineer at Skyscanner).
The main topic of the evening will be The Evolution of Design Systems: how the panorama has changed in two years since Alla's seminal talk at Responsive Day Out? How is changed the perception of style guides, component libraries, and design systems, now that they have been widely adopted by so many companies? Not only: what does it mean to evolve and maintain such ecosystems?
During the course of the evening, we will go through these questions, starting with the experience of the speakers and then extend the discussion to all the attendees.
Schedule of the evening
18:30 - Doors will open. Welcoming drinks and pizza.
19:00 - A Design System: A year in review - James Ferguson + Tim von Oldenburg
19:45 - Some more pizza and drinks
20:00 - Teams, cultures and design system strategies - Alla Kholmatova
20:30 - End of the meetup.
More chats and discussions, possibly at a nearby pub.
A Design System: A year in review.
In this talk we’ll uncover our journey in creating a Design System for Skyscanner and share our learnings on how we sold it to the business by proving its worth. We’ll talk through some of the design and tech considerations we’ve made and share the tools and techniques which have helped us along the way.
Lead Designer and Product Owner, Design Systems & Tooling at Skyscanner.

Tim is a design technologist who is working to bring design and engineering together. He is most interested in inclusive design and the social impact of technology, but coffee is pretty good too.
Teams, cultures, and design system strategies
Every design system is unique. Your organisational structure, team culture, design approach, project, and even the physical space you’re in, will shape your system. In this talk I invite you to think beyond patterns and components, and look at the underlying structures and connections which make your design system what it is.
Alla Kholmatova is an independent UX and interaction designer, who has a long-term obsession with design systems. She's an occasional contributor to design publications, such as A List Apart, and an owner of a modest but charming vintage robot collection.
