Why are we trying to ban conversion therapy?So-called “conversion” therapy is a damaging, degrading and discriminatory practice that seeks to correct something that does not need fixing: a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression.Conversion therapy harms those who go through it, both physically and mentally, and the effects can last a lifetime. All forms of conversion practices are abusive and need to be banned.What is the UK Government doing?<a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/banning-conversion-therapy/banning-conversion-therapy" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The UK Government has introduced proposals for how it will ban conversion therapy</a> through legislation in England and Wales that will be introduced to Parliament in spring 2022.The Government is now consulting on these proposals and calling for feedback on its plans.Everyone aged 16 and over can respond to this consultation, and responses from Scotland and Northern Ireland will be forwarded to the Scottish Government and Northern Ireland Executive to inform their legislation for a ban.<a href="https://equalityhub.citizenspace.com/government-equalities-office/banning-conversion-therapy/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The consultation is live now </a>and the deadline for responses is Friday 10 December.
