What is CBT?

Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) looks at how our thoughts and what we do impacts how we feel in our mood and in our bodies and CBT for chronic pain looks at how we can adapt thoughts and behaviours to improve how we feel

Is this suitable for me?

This course is for people with chronic pain (lasting more than 3 months) who want to explore non medication options to help them cope with pain. It is not a substitute for medical advice from your healthcare provider. You may want to discuss with them whether this may be helpful for you.

Who is taking the class?

Can I attend if I am taking painkillers or having other treatment for my chronic pain?

Of course! Chronic pain is a complex condition and looking at both physical and emotional or psychological components can be helpful. This course will help you understand the psychological components of pain and learn skills to manage them.

What should I bring?

Please bring an open mind and be willing to interact kindly with others in this safe space to facilitate learning together. Please also bring a pen and paper to take your own notes to help you remember any important learning to use at home.

Is this individual therapy?

Do I need to do anything in between sessions?

Yes, it will be important that you complete agreed tasks at home and try to learn and try new skills and behaviours. Research shows that people who practise CBT skills at home make better progress.

What is involved?

Attending weekly for the full 6 week course will be most beneficial. Each session is one hour long and they will take place on Thursdays 2-3pm starting 1 May until 5 June inclusive

What if I cancel or do not attend a session?

The best benefit will be if you attend every session. Each participant will be using a workbook with information for all the sessions so may use this to catch up. Unfortunately no refunds are available for cancelled or non-attended sessions.

What size are classes?

Classes will be small with maximum 10-15 places. This small group will enhance learning opportunities and peer support in a safe space.

Question 13

Is there any evidence for CBT?

Accepted Answer

Yes, there is lots of research evidence to show CBT works for many conditions. It is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for chronic pain. NICE is an organisation which evaluates research for different treatments and produces guidelines based on their value.

What does my ticket include?

Tickets at £27.80 cover one session on the date shown. Tickets at £136.14 cover the 6 one hour sessions from 1 May to 5 June inclusive.
