WEIRD BOTANY: ABSTRACT WATERCOLOURS

Join London Drawing Group cofounder Luisa MacCormack for a special session drawing from her own practice exploring the weird, wild word of Botany (and fungi ;) )

Drawn from Luisa’s own practice of abstract ink paintings, This unique session will include a short artist’s talk with Luisa, where she will share the motivations behind her most recent series of works, exploring how they came about, what inspired them, and how abstraction functions in her work.

Through guided experimentation, students will learn to embrace the spontaneous nature of watercolour (Luisa uses a specific kind of watercolour ink, so ink would also be great for this session), allowing unexpected shapes and colors to emerge on the page. Drawing from the bizarre forms of exotic plants, participants will delve into the realm of abstraction, unlocking new possibilities for creative expression.

This will be a very personal session that  invites participants to step inside Luisa’s practice, including some extended demonstrations and advice on materials.

We hope you can join us in celebrating the beauty of some true botanical oddities while honing your watercolour skills in a supportive and inspiring environment.

Materials

Watercolour or Inks

Luisa uses a brand of watercolour inks called Dr PH Martens Watercolour inks which have amazingly luminous properties, they are expensive but are so concentrated that they last for years

Paper, lots of it! Luisa will be working on a variety of different sizes, from around A6 to around A3 for demonstrations, you are welcome to use whatever size you like

Luisa tends to use either a Saunders Waterford watercolour paper, or Fabriano Medioevalis which usefully comes pre cut in smaller sheets.
