Join us as we hear from the Europa Nostra Award winning team tell us how they restored and re-invigorated Westminster Hall

Securing the historic heart of British politics: learn about the decade long conservation of Westminster Hall – the oldest surviving part of the Palace of Westminster, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Grade I-listed Hall has hosted state events for almost 1,000 years and tells the story of the development of the rule of the rule of law, from absolute monarchy through to the democracy we have today. Patrick Duerden, architect and practice director at Donald Insall Associates, will discuss how the team conserved and enhanced one of Britian’s most significant buildings and the technical challenges this presented. Patrick DuerdenPatrick Duerden is a conservation architect with over twenty years’ experience conserving and renewing the historic built environment for the lasting enjoyment of future generations. A practice director at Donald Insall Associates, he leads work at the Parliamentary Estate, the Royal Household and Historic Royal Palaces. He is also monitoring architect for the Crown Estate and inspecting architect for the United Synagogue and the Archdiocese of Southwark. He has worked at the Palace of Westminster continuously for over a decade, leading the Europa Nostra award-winning conservation of Westminster Hall and several other notable projects across the site. Patrick’s interests lie in how buildings communicate significance, and how architectural conservation mediates the meaning that history holds for contemporary audiences. He is motivated by the joy of architecture, and the satisfaction of completing projects which hold meaning for diverse groups of people.
