What can School Streets do?

Established in 1996, the Sustainable Housing & Urban Studies Unit (SHUSU) is a multidisciplinary research group at the University of Salford hosted within the Centre for Applied Research in Health, Welfare and Policy (CARe). We seek to understand complex social issues and work towards social justice and environmental sustainability within the urban environment. An online seminar on School Streets and facilitating children's safe active travel. Hosted by Healthy Active Cities , University of Salford

A School Street is a road outside of a school that has a temporary restriction on motorised traffic at school drop-off and pick-up times. The restriction applies to both school traffic (exempting blue-badge holders) and through traffic in order to create a safer and healthier environment for children, parents, staff and residents. In addition to contributing to tackling air pollution and poor health and reducing road danger (particularly for children), School Streets have been identified as an important aspect of COVID-19 recovery plans. With public travel restricted, car travel is considered by many parents and guardians as the safest way to get children to school. However this risks exchanging one health crisis for another, with school-related traffic congestion exacerbating levels of pollution. Considering road danger is commonly identified by parents and guardians as the greatest contributor to any reluctance to support children to walk, cycle and roll to school, School Streets are an opportunity to make it safer and easier for children to get to school actively. This online seminar will have three presentations (information below) followed by an audience Q&A session. Presentation 1 : Jenny Wiles, Regional Director (North for Living Streets)Living Streets is the UK charity for everyday walking. Jenny currently leads a team delivering projects in schools, workplaces and communities across the north of England, developing strategic partnerships and influences policy and investment in the walking agenda. Jenny’s presentation will discuss Living Streets schools programs and how they are supporting School Streets (with an emphasis on work in Greater Manchester), as well as touch upon examples of best practice nationally.Presentation 2: : Asa Thomas, PhD Researcher at the Active Travel Academy, University of Westminster, pronouns He/HimAsa will be talking about his current research into how School Streets can be part of changing travel behaviour under Covid-19, exploring the potential wider benefits of School Streets and the limitations of changing streets temporarily.Presentation 3: Helen Rimmer &amp; Lorenza Casini, Clean Air LevenshulmeHelen and Lorenza are part of Clean Air Levenshulme; an informal group of local parents in Levenshulme, Greater Manchester. They've been active for 3 or 4 years raising awareness about and campaigning for solutions for healthy air for everyone. They first established as many of the members have children with breathing issues. They’ve been campaigning for a GM Clean Air Zone, tougher national air quality limits, safer cycling and walking, and more recently School Streets.Please register for the event and we will send the seminar link closer to the time.
