In its policy paper, the Government states that a devolved Lancashire would provide the county with “new powers and funding to increase opportunities and living standards through inclusive growth and productivity improvements”.Lancashire’s 15 local authorities were unable to reach an agreement on devolution when the Government Devolution Agreement came into place in 2014. The two main sticking points were the appointment of a mayor due to concerns around undermining local democracy, and the reduction in the number of councils.In July 2023 there was a breakthrough when the government outlined a commitment to drawing up a devolution deal with Lancashire. It is believed that the three ‘top-tier’ authorities, Lancashire County Council, Blackpool Council and Blackburn with Darwen Council have since been involved in talks.The long awaited news for Lancashire organisations is that the Lancashire devolution deal is now within reach.
