With a lifespan of thousands—sometimes hundreds of thousands—of year’s, radioactive nuclear waste will outlive us all. How then, do we warn

In conjunction with Swiss artist Marcel Rickli’s solo exhibition at Belfast Exposed, this artist talk asks, how can we protect future generations against highly radioactive waste, such as that produced in our nuclear power plants and in medicine, research and industry? Nuclear waste sites will pose a danger to life for hundreds of thousands of years to come. Beyond technical measures to ensure secure geological repositories, novel communicative solutions are also required if we are to warn future civilisations so distant that they are beyond our wildest imagination about the dangers posed by these sites. Marcel Ricki’s work explores the predicament of nuclear futures, raising fundamental questions of an anthropological nature – about the role of language and culture in the transmission of information over extremely long periods of time, but also about the almost uncontrollable human risk factor.Speakers:Marcel Rickli - Swiss photographerSascha Renner -Curator / Publicist / Photo &amp; Art HistorianBiographies:Marcel Rickli is based in Zurich having studied Photodesign at the College of Design in Bern. He has exhibited at a number of photography festivals including the Athens Photo Festival; Month of Photography in Minsk and Fotofestiwal, Lodz where his project Aeon was selected for their Open Call. In 2015 he published his monograph Hagneck.
