Waste can hit the headlines - think plastic in our oceans, or local authority closure of recycling centres. And it's a big deal - waste causes 6% of our greenhouse gas emissions and that % may increase as other sectors decarbonise. Our government aims to establish a circular economy where products are used again or for longer through reuse, repair and recycling. But the National Audit Office said (June 2023) 'the UK missed its 2020 recycling target after nearly a decade of stalled recycling rates. The main reforms it has taken forward so far, on collection and packaging, have been delayed.' Martin Hyde is a sustainability manager and has specialist knowledge of current and future government policies. He will explain how the current situation has developed and what policy choices lie ahead for national and local government. There will be ample time for questions, discussion and debate.This event is jointly organised by Climate Action Ilkley and the Environment Forum of Ilkley &amp; District U3A.
